I hate to say "I told you so," but… I told you so. Literally a day before Astro Bot launched, I wrote that we should all be paying attention to this game, this dev team (Team Asobi forever), and this ridiculously charming little robot. And what happened next? Oh, just Game of the Year awards left and right, 10/10s across the board, and enough praise to short-circuit a DualSense. (And you guys wrote in the comments that this was just "An Ad masquerading as an article… shame)
Well, it turns out Sony was paying attention too - because PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst just called Astro Bot one of Sony's "most exciting recent successes." And folks, he didn't say that for fun. Sony clearly sees something special here, and while we don't have a sequel announcement (yet), it's clear Astro's not going back into the drawer anytime soon.
Hulst even went as far as calling Astro Bot a "smash hit," saying it achieved universal acclaim and swept awards shows. It's now officially considered an "emerging IP," which is corporate-speak for "this adorable little guy is getting the franchise treatment."
This echoes what Sony president Hiroki Totoki said last year about wanting to see more family-friendly titles - and Astro Bot is exactly that. It's wholesome, imaginative, and somehow manages to deliver next-gen spectacle without needing a gritty revenge plot or 500 hours of crafting.
Honestly, it's refreshing. In a gaming world dominated by mature epics, massive open worlds, and an alarming number of live service attempts, Astro Bot proved there's still room for joy, wonder, and tight, well-crafted platforming. It didn't try to sell us a battle pass. It just showed up, melted our hearts, and nailed the landing. (And then provided us with multiple FREE bonus levels)
And if that's not enough to get excited about? Sony's film division is reportedly pushing for a movie adaptation too. So yeah, Astro might be about to go full multimedia icon - and I am so here for it.
No official word on the next game just yet, but come on. You don't call something your "most exciting recent success" and then ghost it. I'd bet all my PlayStation trophies that Team Asobi is already hard at work on the next adventure.
Astro's just getting started. And I can't wait to see where he jets off to next.
